01.26.10Flexi Knobs by Michael Hlatky and Kristian GohlkeWe started to cover the demo session with the Flexi-Knob project from the AudioCluster associated to the University of Applied Sciences Bremen in Germany. The approach behind this project is to create a quick change between normally assigned Midi Channels on a GUI by using multiple mouse cursors. On the first site it seems quite strange, having more than one mousecursor floating over the graphical interface but in this case it totally makes sense. Roel Vertegaal was presenting the paper by him and Eric Akaoka , Tim Ginn dealing with the problem of having no possibilty of adding a fully working display to styroform (or any other material) mock ups. The way he presented was very nice. He gave a broad overview on design techniques to deal with this lack of interactive displays: from Arduino over OLED technologies to the first non-interactive iPod modell. Wills from the japanese interface design group was presenting his approach on sketching threedimensionally using a two piece nintendo wiimote array to locate a LED attached to a penlike device. 05.28.09hard hack impressionsToday I had a small look on the hard hack event taking place the c.base here in Berlin. Lots of solder in the air, massive interesting, colourful and smart people around and lots of arduino breadboard fritzing midi rfid action. I could not stay so long and blaming it on weather and other activities I could not even take part in one of the workshops I wanted to. 05.28.09trackmate - outstanding diy trackingFriends, this is amazing. I will shortly present you trackmate, an open source initiative from, guess...yes Tangible Media Group in the MIT Media Lab. Don´t ask me how they do it but they again left me completely stunned. It works really easy: just a webcam, some fiducials printed on a common office printer, glue and light and open source code for the LusidOSC tracking. (a protocol layer for unique spatial input devices). It´s so remarkable to see the approach of making it inexpensive and available to all users, developers and those who are just interested in.
